Contemporary art of North Borneo

The 2nd largest rain forest after the amazon is the borneo.. Only in Borneo one can find the largest flower species in the world and thats the "Rafflesia" and in North Borneo lies the tallest mountain in South East Asia and that's the Majestic Mount Kinabalu..

I could go on talking about the nature here in Borneo... but i think i'll talk about art scene here instead..

It's been 8 years since a renown artist Yusof Gajah went to North Borneo.. he came back few month back for a visit.. and this is his comment on the art scene here.. 8 years and there's not a single improvement in the art scene.. The question is why?

The local artist here are mostly realism.. and the subject is basically village scenery, mount kinabalu, the orang utan, rafflesia, and the sea turtle.. One could imagine how does it look like, going around town and looking at the same subject over and over again for 8years.. I had a few chat with some of the artist and they say it's a boring work.. reproduce their art again and again. The only thing is.. that kind of painting sells.. tourist like it.. thats how they claim..

I hope the Contemporary art could grow here in North Borneo...

This piece that I did is just a sample on how to make nature art look more interesting, rather than just taking a piece of photo and reproducing.. might as well blow up the actual photo into a big scale and frame it..

I'm sorry if i sounded harsh.. hope this piece brings more creativity, ideas and a more honesty rather than just for the sake of profit making...
